Policed State in Amsterdam Update
For those wanting to actually know more instead of looking as far as their mouse click finger, here are two documents you can take the time to read.
The Legislation
A legal Overview
Since the posting of the video there has been an enormous reaction.
Bicycle Mark podcasted about it here, and vlogged about it.
It has been posted and commented on many blogs. (I did not spam them myselves, they posted it on their own websites. The only way I could have spamed them was by using some form of mind control. Yes the video does come into my RSS feed automatically. It's called video blogging. That's not spamming either.)

Now I listen to my friend Bicyclemark speaking to Gabe on the issue. AND NOW I GET IT! Question is: Am I stupid not to get it at first?
All the background info you need to understand what happened in the video was given to me in this podcast. Thanks for clearing that up :-)

If you were wondering where all those neanderthale reactions suddenly come from: You have been blogged by one of the most popular and reactionairy blogs in the NL: 'GeenStijl.nl' ('No Style').
I am ashamed to be dutch...

Ashamed to be Dutch....
Do you really, really think they have a point here, screaming 'police state'? Come on man, they were just trying to be some kind of smartass!. If you (Gabe & Gabe) have real balls, you should try this kind of behaviour in your own glorious country.....let's see what would have happened then....

The anonymous posters attacking Gabe are tarnishing themselves, and themselves alone.
With every new idiotic comment posted, I laugh a bit more.
Keep kicking ass, Gabe.

I never spamed any other site. Other people linked to me form thier site on thier own valition. I have nothing to say about it. I do have something to say about slanderous, xenophobic, and hate comments on my blog. I will not tolerate it. this is not for me, but also to make sure that this does not turn into a mud slinging war wear people are just venting personal frustration of Bush onto me. It surprising how many comments I've had from a small group of Dutch citizens who don't mind having thier civil liberties violated. Hey, it's your porogative. If you read the comments carefully, you will see the laws in question. Go read, look and listen. Then make up your own thought, go out and live life.

@ Netherlands,
(This is also a response to your comment under Gabe's i-pod post)
I'm really getting fed up with everybody throwing dirt at gabe on HIS blog like it's about him:
- representing the whole United States of America and the Bush administration,
- being arrogant,
- acting like he owns the world,
- or being ball-less for not having himself arrested??????!!!!!!
Where the F*** do you guys get off! You have NO idea what he is about, so keep your dirt to yourself!
(this was not JUST at you, I'm sorry)
If you want to form a (well-balanced)opinion and get your comments posted I suggest you:
READ, THINK, AND THEN MAYBE POST
(under the right post, instead of one about converting video so it will play on your i-pod)
And one last thing about the spamming (which Gabe already explained like three times on this weblog):
he hasn't spammed other websites. People linked to this because they understood what Gabe's point was and knew that it is an important question to ask: How much freedom are you willing to give up for a sense of safety? (check the links that Pavle put up under previous posts about the legal side of this)
This little incident, that is getting SO blown out of proportion was just something that happened to him last fridaynight and he wanted to share that with 30/40 people who regularly check his site. He wasn't making a news item or a documentary in which he needed to cover every aspect.
Of course if you share stuff on the internet with family and friends, anybody can comment and if this leads to a discussion about the issue at hand, then you and everybody else is of course more than welcome to join in.
btw, it's not so very relevant if this is your way of making a point, it doesn't have to be, it's not your blog. And you don't have to bow for him, just read the articles and make up your own mind.

We are all entitled to the presumption of innocence. Our rights may be limited when there are reasons to presume we have done something wrong. If I am not suspected or even suspicious I believe I should be able to go about my business without interference. Under the preventive searching rules the police may search my vehicle, bags and clothes without any proper reason: my presence in an area is reason enough. If this area had been the immediate and recent scene of a crime, IÕd say okay. This may be suspicious. But if I am going about my business on any given day, and have not accidentally come across a crime scene, I feel I should be left alone.
You might be right. You are in title to the presumtion of innocence. But what about the people that are not innocent? What if someone is walking around with a weapon? What if you became a victim of that weapon? It happens all the time in the centre of Amsterdam. Not so long ago a young man lost his life due to a stabwound in his heart. This as also in the centre of Amsterdam. The way you put it the police can only search someone when they have done something wrong. The thing is, that might be too late in some cases! I think you have a point at what you say, but I really disagree, because if you don't actually see the crime, it doesn't mean that it's not there!!
